Expanding Mental Health Services for Youth OSEC and CSEC Survivors

In an ongoing commitment to provide survivors of human trafficking and gender-based violence with free, accessible, and community-based alternative mental health support, Eleison welcomes the fifth cohort of the Healing and Resilience after Trauma (HaRT) program. This is the first cohort made up entirely of youth survivors of Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC) and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC).

OSEC and CSEC are grave issues that affect countless children worldwide. OSEC involves producing, distributing, and consuming sexually explicit content involving minors online. CSEC, on the other hand, refers to the exploitation of children through prostitution, pornography, or other illicit activities for monetary or personal gain. The victims of these crimes often endure physical, emotional, and psychological trauma, leaving them with profound scars that can last a lifetime. Many survivors struggle to reintegrate into society and find the support they need to heal and thrive.

HaRT is designed to provide survivors with a holistic approach to healing and nurturing their physical, emotional, and mental well-being in a safe environment. This 12-week group mental health program developed by Healing and Resilience after Trauma (HaRT) combines mindfulness, mind-body practices, and supportive group discussion to address three core themes: safety in the body, radical self-love, and healthy relationships. With several successful cohorts focused on adult survivors, we have taken an extraordinary step forward by launching a youth cohort, signaling a crucial shift in the fight against child exploitation.

HaRT participants will develop a comprehensive toolkit to support their ongoing mental and emotional wellness through learning about self-care, stress management, emotional regulation, and ways to cultivate their resilience. One of the aspects of HaRT is the sense of community it fosters, where participants connect with others who have gone through similar experiences in a safe and nurturing space to share their experiences, fears, and dreams without judgment. This supportive community can be healing for those who have experienced trauma, reducing feelings of isolation and fostering a sense of belonging. One previous HaRT participant shared:

“Because of HaRT, I can better manage my stress and avoid getting overwhelmed by my problems. When faced with a difficult situation, I would remind myself that it’s okay to take a step back and not dwell on it for the time being. This allowed me to relax and set my problems aside, which has been incredibly helpful for my mental health. I try to make time for at least 30 minutes to an hour of yoga each week to take a break from my worries and focus on my well-being.”

This youth-focused initiative reaffirms Eleison’s dedication to providing survivors with the holistic support they need to reclaim their lives, rebuild their self-worth, and step forward with hope and resilience. As these young survivors embark on their healing journey, they remind us to work toward a world where children are protected, supported, and empowered to thrive.
