our work
Survivor Leadership Council
We believe in the importance of survivor leadership. The Survivor Leadership Council (SLC) is an advisory board of human trafficking and gender-based violence survivors who have graduated from at least one of Eleison’s programs. SLC members co-facilitate activities for new clients with Eleison staff, with survivors taking an active role in peer mentorship and modeling. SLC members partner with our staff to ensure Eleison’s programs and research are survivor-centered.
What survivor leadership means to survivors
Photovoice is a participatory research methodology in which survivors use photography to define their experiences on their own terms. Survivors take photographs to share their stories, collaborate with researchers on all aspects of the research process, and use study findings to bring about social change.
Why it matters
Survivors hold critical insights into which programs and policies are most effective, maximizing the impact of efforts to combat human trafficking and gender-based violence.
Survivor leadership in programming, research, and policy is critical to the implementation of rights-based, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered care.
Formal positions for survivor leaders ensure that survivors are compensated for their time and expertise.
