Bansay Financial Literacy Training at DSWD Regional Haven for Women

Financial vulnerability causes survivors of human trafficking and gender-based violence to be more susceptible to experiencing further violence and re-exploitation. Survivors face significant barriers in securing employment and establishing a financial safety net. While multi-faceted approaches are needed to promote financial security for survivors, financial literacy is a crucial aspect of this process. Equipping survivors with financial knowledge and skills can help them establish a foundation of financial security and empower them with tools to shape their decisions as they rebuild their lives.

Eleison has long recognized the importance of financial literacy in fostering financial independence for survivors. Bansay, our brief financial literacy training program, provides survivors with culturally-sensitive knowledge and tools on financial management to make informed financial decisions and build a strong foundation for their economic well-being. It is a stepping stone to our two-year matched-savings program, Barug.

In May 2023, we implemented our Bansay financial literacy training at a government-funded residential care facility for women survivors of abuse, the Philippines Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) – Regional Haven for Women. The training covered a range of topics, including budgeting, saving, debt management, setting financial goals, financial negotiation with family members and peers, and emotional wellness and self-care. The participants engaged in group activities, role-playing scenarios, and hands-on exercises to develop practical skills and enhance their understanding of financial concepts. Furthermore, the session emphasized the importance of cultivating positive financial habits, such as regular saving, tracking expenses, and making informed decisions.

The Bansay session at the DSWD Regional Haven for Women exemplifies our dedication to empowering survivors with the knowledge and access to resources to regain control in their lives. Through this program, we aim to ensure that survivors have the opportunity to improve their economic well-being, regain control over their lives, and build a more secure future.
