Brown University Student Winter Internship at Eleison

We recently hosted three interns from Brown University through a mini-internship program sponsored by the Careers in the Common Good program at Brown. Each winter break, Brown students are provided the opportunity to work on engaging, high-impact projects for social impact organizations and companies, providing students with hands-on experience in organizations committed to promoting the common good.

Three undergraduate students – Sammy Anuras, Davis Kelly, and Maia Eng – completed a two-week internship at Eleison in which they supported us in the writing and design of our 2024 annual report. Specifically, Eleison’s winter interns assisted our team with copywriting, graphic design, and data visualization, crafting a cohesive annual report capturing Eleison’s impact over the past year.

In speaking with our interns regarding their experience working at Eleison, they noted the supportive and professional environment at Eleison, as well as how their internship has inspired them to continue pursuing future work to benefit the community. Intern Davis Kelly said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Eleison. I sincerely appreciated the warmth with which the team welcomed me, and I am more emboldened than ever to continue to do work that advances the common good. Thank you to Laura and the rest of the team for facilitating such a seamless and rewarding experience.”

The internship provided students with a real-life opportunity to apply design and communications skills while upholding our firm commitment to ethical storytelling guidelines that honor the personhood and experiences of historically marginalized communities. Intern Sammy Anuras shared some of her learnings at Eleison:

“This experience deepened my understanding of the intersection between storytelling, data, and design in nonprofit communications. I learned to present data with clarity and empathy, crafting narratives that respected the lived experiences of survivors while still resonating with stakeholders. The process challenged me to adopt a culturally-sensitive, trauma-informed, and dignity-first approach, ensuring that the report celebrated resilience and empowerment rather than reducing survivors to statistics. Additionally, the winternship highlighted the systemic barriers disproportionately affecting women and children in marginalized and under-resourced communities. At Eleison, I learned the importance of blending technical expertise with social consciousness to build equity-driven solutions that uplift and amplify underrepresented voices.”

Similarly, intern Maia Eng noted how she valued the professional development support she experienced at Eleison along with a meaningful opportunity to center the voices of survivors:

“My experience working with Eleison has been deeply impactful. In the team’s collaborative environment, I received helpful feedback that allowed me to strengthen both my writing and graphic design skills. As a Filipina American, I am especially grateful to have been able to contribute to this project and the empowerment of survivors’ voices, both in the Philippines and across the world. Thank you to the Eleison team for their steadfast support and warmth throughout this internship.”

We’d like to express our sincere gratitude to Brown University for providing the opportunity for these three students to work with us and to each of these students for their dedicated work over their mini-internship at Eleison.
