New Motivational Interviewing Training at North Star Initiative

Eleison recently completed a Motivational Interviewing (MI) training at North Star Initiative (NSI). NSI is a nonprofit that provides residential programming for survivors of human trafficking, addressing the physical, psychological, educational, and emotional needs of survivors. Eleison first provided training for NSI staff in 2023. We were delighted to return to NSI to train new personnel and provide a follow-up training for those who participated in last year’s training program.

MI is a humanistic, evidence-based counseling approach designed to strengthen a person’s motivation for and commitment to change within an atmosphere of partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation. Through its empathetic and non-confrontational style, MI fosters a supportive environment where individuals feel heard and respected. Research has demonstrated that MI enhances positive behavior change, client satisfaction, and client engagement and retention in services. The use of MI is consistent with trauma-informed practice, aligning with the principles of building trust, honoring autonomy, avoiding re-traumatization, and addressing ambivalence in a respectful and person-centered manner. The integration of MI into direct service provision can contribute to more compassionate and empowering care, particularly for individuals who have experienced significant trauma and exploitation.

In discussing their experiences in the training, participants shared positive feedback about how they plan to put what they learned into practice in their work at NSI. One trainee said:

“I loved all of the examples and interaction. I facilitate groups, so I’m planning on reflecting a lot more and listening more for change talk to hone in on what the clients want. Thank you so much for your time and energy! You are very personable and a great communicator/presenter!”

The Eleison team is available to conduct MI training for other service providers. Trainings can be provided anywhere globally and can be customized to match the organization’s specific needs. If your organization is interested in receiving MI training, please email info@eleisonfoundation.org or message us here.
